Once again, those high points of the consumer year – Black Friday and Cyber Monday – are almost upon us.

But an increase in online shopping unfortunately also means an increase in scams, phishing attacks and other threats of the digital age. So here are some tips for safer shopping as the busiest day of the year for e-commerce approaches:

1. Adopt password best practices

Although it seems obvious, using the same passwords over and over again across multiple sites, or using easy-to-find information such as your date of birth or your pet’s name, is a common mistake online.

One of the easiest steps anyone can take to remedy this is to use a password manager, which makes it easy to create unique, random passwords for each individual account you set up. It also helps protect you against “keylogger” type attacks – software that reads your keystrokes and transmits it to thieves or hackers – by allowing you to automatically fill in online forms without having to type in the credit card numbers and sensitive information whenever you make an online purchase. .

2. Beware of phishing

Unfortunately, phishing is now so common and sophisticated that it can be difficult to spot a fake message when it lands in your inbox.

Phishing scams prey on our panic responses, so be wary of emails, especially from unknown sources or strange email addresses, that urge you to do something, like reset from all an account or change your password. Be careful when clicking on any links or attachments sent to you.

If you are unsure of the authenticity of a request, contact the organization or individual directly through their official channels.

3. Always check the URL bar

An increasingly common online fraud involves creating fake web pages that look like real trustmarks, but are actually controlled by thieves who will redirect all money spent on their sites directly to their bank accounts.

Particularly if you received a website address via email, there are several things to pay close attention to. Make sure the address in the URL bar matches the company you think you are dealing with. Preferably, search for the business by name and make sure the URL you click on matches the brand’s website that appears on search engines. Pay attention to slight misspellings or character substitutions – make sure, for example, that you are on tesco.com and not tesc0.com.

Equally important, look for the padlock icon next to the URL in the URL bar. This lets you know that you are on a secure site that uses an encrypted connection, which means that no one can intercept or spy on the data traveling between your device and this site. If not, it’s unclear who might be watching your traffic in hopes of getting their hands on your passwords, card details, or other sensitive information. Clicking on the padlock should tell you two things: that the connection is secure and that the site’s certificate is valid. Never enter valuable or personal information on sites where it is not.

4. Manage your payment methods

Using a mobile payment provider helps secure your information by putting an extra virtual layer between your money and the companies you do business with.

Even if thieves manage to breach an online merchant’s security and obtain their customers’ payment information, they will only get the virtual card number provided by the mobile payment service. They would then have to go through the security measures of Google or Apple (for example) to gain access to your real information – a much tougher challenge for your average cyber crook.

On a “mission” to open up the exclusive world of alternatives and challenge the notion of ownership, the team of Ctrl-Alt is shaking up the world of alternative investing by offering broader access to assets with a new app. The app, Ctrl Alt, launched on November 17 – and anyone can sign up.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Ctrl Alt CEO Matt Ong said: “The idea for Ctrl Alt came from the lived experience of always wanting to invest or being able to directly buy assets like property or even collectibles like watches.

“There are many others like me and especially from the younger generation, who are drawn to the impressive investment profiles of alternative assets, especially compared to what you could gain if you just left your money on a Bank account.”

Mr. Ong continued, “But these investment opportunities are not always accessible for various reasons. You need a lot of money to invest and even more, you need the right contacts to access those investments.

“I spent my career in alternative assets, creating financial products for the wealthiest in society and it was frustrating to see that there was nothing available for everyone. Ctrl Alt was designed to solve this problem and make accessing these types of investments simple and user-friendly.

The free app allows users to access alternative assets, such as property, sustainability projects and more, by purchasing digital stocks that have legal recourse to the underlying asset.

Mr Ong explained: “Traditionally, you would have needed a huge amount of capital to invest in alternative assets like art, luxury watches and even real estate, which most people don’t have. necessarily.

“It’s created a huge barrier to entry, not only from the financial side, but also from the lack of conversation around alternatives, because it’s been so inaccessible. Most people have no way of finding out about these guys. of investments and they are often presented only to a small audience, generally those who have the capital to invest.

According to Mr Ong, the Ctrl Alt platform allows multiple people to come together and invest in one – or more – of these assets, with as little as £10, in a “safe” and “secure” way.

Mr Ong said: “We have created a market for people to explore alternatives and invest in fractions of them. It’s kind of similar to what platforms like Crowdcube do – allowing people to own a stake in a company. With us, people become owners of an asset-linked share.

The shares are represented as fungible tokens, which means that they are all equivalent and freely exchangeable for each other.

According to Ctrl Alt, the tokens are classified by the Financial Conduct Authority as security tokens and contain the same legal rights as a stock.

Mr Ong continued: “We work with amazing asset partners who are experts in every type of asset, whether real estate or otherwise, to bring the most exciting investment opportunities to our platform.”

Mr. Ong continued, “We are an asset-agnostic platform and ultimately the available assets people can invest in will be determined by the users themselves. We allow users to vote on what they want to see next and what they want to see more.

According to Ctrl Alt, only eligible UK investors can currently invest, but the app will soon be available for the rest of Europe “and beyond”.

Mr. Ong said: “Ultimately, we want Ctrl Alt to be the go-to, user-friendly and accessible platform for alternative investing. We want to support investors – those who are at the beginning of their journey or those who are passionate about alternatives but, like me, could not access them before. »

BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court adjourned until December 12 the hearing of the petition filed by the microblogging site Twitter against the central government’s withdrawal orders.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology requested time to present its case in the case, following which Judge Krishna S Dixit adjourned the case on Wednesday.

Twitter has approached the High Court challenging multiple blocking instructions issued to it to remove tweets, accounts and URLs from the platform.

The social media platform, in its motion filed in June 2022, claimed that the Center was required to send notice to owners of Twitter handles against which blocking orders are issued.

The company claimed that it was prohibited from even informing its account holders of the withdrawal.

Senior barristers Arvind Datar and Ashok Haranahalli have argued cases on Twitter’s behalf in the High Court for the past two months.

The main argument so far on Twitter’s behalf is that the government’s blocking orders run counter to the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in the Shreya Singhal case.

This was the case in which the Supreme Court struck down Section 66A of the Information Technology Act.

Twitter argued that those whose accounts are to be deleted should be notified first.

She also submitted the list of accounts, tweets and URLs that the government asked her to remove between February 2, 2021 and February 28, 2022.

The issue relates to 10 government orders during this period in which the Center ordered the microblogging site to block 1,474 accounts, 175 Tweets, 256 URLs and one hashtag. Twitter is, however, disputing orders linked to 39 of these URLs.

At an earlier hearing, Twitter also submitted a 300-page compilation on how these issues are being handled in various countries.

The blocking orders fall under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, which provides for the blocking of content contrary to the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, concerns the defense of the India, state security, friendly relations with foreign states, public order and content that provokes or incites an offense.

Twitter claimed the orders did not comply with Section 69A of the Computers Act.

A URL analysis service included in products from major security vendors has leaked personal and sensitive information from links to corporate web pages that could be gold for threat actors.

This revelation comes from a report by Positive Security researchers.

Part of the issue, which was quietly resolved in July, involved urlscan.io, which is used by a number of service-related firewall and gateway products to scan and scan URLs in emails and websites. . Part of the problem is also poorly crafted URLs that contain sensitive information.

But poorly configured security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) tools in applications that create databases of URLs also play a role. If left open to the internet and found by the wrong person, these databases can be exploited for their content.

These include links to password reset pages, account creation pages, API keys, DocuSign signature request pages, Sharepoint invitations, WebEx meeting registration pages, invoices PayPal and invitations to team meetings.

“Overall, the urlscan.io service contains a wealth of sensitive information of all kinds, which can be used by hackers, spammers or cybercriminals, for example to take control of accounts, steal identity or conduct credible phishing campaigns,” the report states.

According to a report, urlscan.io lists 26 commercial security solutions from vendors such as Palo Alto, Splunk, Rapid7, FireEye, and ArcSight that have integrated the service through its API. Others, like GitHub, use the urlscan.io API internally.

“If any of these API tools/users accidentally perform public URL scans, it could lead to systematic data leakage,” the report said. “As these advanced security tools are mostly installed in large enterprises and government organizations, the information disclosed could be particularly sensitive.”

In addition to commercial products, the report says that the integration page also lists 22 open source projects, some of which are information gathering tools, and some of which are simple library implementations to facilitate querying the APIs.

The scans performed by urlscan.io can include a lot of information, the report says, including:

  • the submitted URL (with all GET parameters);
  • the effective URL in case of redirection;
  • all HTTP requests that were made while scraping/parsing the URL;
  • information on the IP addresses and domains communicated;
  • a screenshot of the page taken at the time of the scan;
  • the site’s full HTML response.

According to the report, organizations are inadvertently creating vulnerable databases of scanned URLs through the security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) capabilities of the security platforms they use. SOAR allows organizations to write their own playbooks to connect different data sources with security tools and services. To facilitate development, the platforms offer integrations with several third-party services such as urlscan.io. With the urlscan.io package installed, a playbook can extract URLs from incoming emails and submit them to urlscan.io with an automated command.

However, under certain conditions, such as an error in a playbook, misconfiguration of the urlscan.io integration or account visibility settings, or if the integration itself has a bug that does not respect the visibility chosen by user, a scan may be wrong. submitted as public.

After being warned, urlscan.io released a new version in July, with additional deletion rules to periodically delete scan results that match certain search patterns. It highlights the default visibility setting in its UI and adds an option to set maximum team-wide visibility.

He also published a blog post titled “Scan Visibility Best Practices” which explains the scan visibility settings, encourages users to frequently review their submissions, and details urlscan’s efforts to prevent such leaks.

Web services should ensure that they promptly expire password reset and similar links and do not disclose unnecessary information to unauthenticated users through links that could become public, the report said. On an unsubscribe page, remove the user’s email address and request additional authentication/information before posting any personal information. For example, many package tracking websites now ask for a postal code before displaying the full address. When implementing API authentication, the report adds, do not accept API keys via GET parameters; instead require the use of a separate HTTP header.

The report states that IT administrators can also search urlscan.io and other services for any data leaks regarding their own web service or organization, request deletions/exclusions, and if necessary disable and rotate leaked API keys. users.

urlscan.io users/security teams who integrate the service should review their ordering, integration and account visibility settings, add the report, keep their integrations up to date, review regularly their submitted scansand check the urlscan.io blog post for more information.

Links and images are two of the most common resources you will add to your web pages. It is therefore essential to know how to treat them correctly.

Every website needs to reference certain resources, be it images, files, or other web pages. Deciding how to link to other files is extremely important to ensure that browsers locate them correctly.

You can link to resources using a relative or absolute URL. This applies to both local files on a computer and protocol-based URLs accessible on the web.

How to use an absolute URL path

An absolute URL contains the full path to a particular file location. Examples of these include the full path to files on your computer:

  • file:///C:/Users/Sharl/Desktop/test.html
  • file:///C:/Users/John/Documents/Work/Q4Summary.docx
  • file:///C:/Users/Mark/Documents/Music/Recording.mp3

Another example includes a full protocol URL, which you can use to identify a resource to send over the Internet. Most often these begin with “https” or “http”:

  • https://www.google.com
  • https://calendar.google.com/calendar
  • https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms

The absolute URL contains all the information required to locate the file or resource you are trying to access. This is necessary if you are linking to an external site.

  1. Create a simple HTML website by creating a new folder and adding two new files called index.html and styles.css.
  2. In index.htmladd HTML code to create a basic website:
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html lang="en">
    <head>
    <title> My Website </title>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" >
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles.css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div class="container">
    <h1> My Website </h1>
    <p> Welcome to my website. </p>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>
  3. In styles.cssadd style to webpage.
    body {
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    }

    .container {
    display: flex;
    flex-direction: column;
    align-items: center;
    }

    .mb28 {
    margin-bottom: 28px;
    }

  4. In index.htmladd a tag inside the container div and add the absolute URL of the main Google site (https://www.google.com).
    <a href="https://www.google.com" class="mb28">Google.com</a>
  5. You can also access images online using the full absolute path to the stored file. You can also take additional steps to ensure that you have added responsive images to your HTML Web page.
    <img src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1583768138297-718a9cc5b746?ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=3870&q=80" alt="Cute bird photo" class="mb28" width="900" height="600">
  6. Click on the index.html file to open it in a browser and view the recovered image from its external location.
    Absolute bird image URL

  7. From the root folder of your website, create a new folder to store images, called Pictures. Inside the folder, add a new image and give it a name, such as CuteBird.jpg.
    New bird photo stored in file manager

  8. Identify the absolute path to the image file you just added. You can do this by finding it in the navigation path of your operating system’s file manager application. You will also need to add the file name to the end of the path. For example, “C:UsersSharlDesktopWebsiteImagesCuteBird.jpg”
    Find absolute path in file manager

  9. In index.htmlreplace your image tag with a new image that uses the absolute path pointing to the CuteBird.jpg file stored on your computer. Remember to add the file:// prefix to indicate a local file system resource. On Unix and macOS, you can then add the absolute path you identified in the previous step. On Windows you will need to replace backslashes with slashes and add an extra slash before the drive letter, for example:
    <img src="file:///C:/Users/Sharl/Desktop/Website/Images/CuteBird.jpg" alt="Cute bird photo" class="mb28" width="900" height="700">
  10. Click on the index.html file to open it in a browser and view the image stored on your computer.
    Absolute URL used to display the bird image

How to use a relative URL path

A relative URL stores only part of the URL or path and is usually relative to the location of the file or the current section of a website.

HTML CSS Folder Path Structure

In the example above, to access Logo.ico of index.html using a relative URL, you would use the path “Images/Icons/Logo.ico”. Other examples include:

  • Pages/Bird1.html
  • Images/CuteBird.jpg
  • styles.css

When you use the same folder structure on another computer, the website will still be able to retrieve the file. When routing on the web, instead of using the full link such as “https://example.com/about”, you can use relative routing instead:

  • /on
  • /Contact
  • /projects/local-clients

You can use a relative URL to create links or reference images in your HTML web page.

  1. Inside the root of your website directory, create a new folder called pages.
  2. In the new Pages folder, create a new file called Bird1.html.
  3. Populate Bird1.html with the HTML code to create the page.
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html lang="en">
    <head>
    <title> Bird 1 </title>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" >
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="../styles.css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div class="container">
    <h1> Coffee </h1>
    <p> Coffee is a sweet bird who loves to game! </p>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>
  4. Inside the div container, add an image tag and use a relative url to link to the CuteBird.jpg image.
    <img src="../Images/CuteBird.jpg" alt="Cute bird photo" class="mb28" width="900" height="700">
  5. In the index.html file, delete the existing content inside the container div. Replace it with one a tag that uses a relative link to open the Bird1.html case.
    <div class="container">
    <h1> My Website </h1>
    <p> Welcome to my website. </p>
    <a href="Pages/Bird1.html" class="mb28">Bird 1: Coffee</a>
    </div>
  6. Click on the index.html file to open it in a browser, then click the new link to go to Bird1.html.
    Relative URL used to display the bird image

You can now determine the difference between absolute and relative URLs. You can now take extra precautions to ensure that your resources are always fetched.

You should also always ensure that any links your users may access are safe and secure.

Here is where you can find its roaming popup

It was during the pandemic that many businesses realized the true power of e-commerce. Going digital has helped many people survive the effects of COVID-19. While this was new exploration for brands at this time, some harnessed the powers of e-commerce years before the pandemic hit.

Love, bonito on wheels

Among these are Love, Bonito, Southeast Asian omnichannel womenswear brands. Since its inception in 2010, the brand has been one of the go-to online stores for ultra-feminine pieces for many shoppers in different parts of the world. In 2019, brought her chic styles to the Philippines, providing plenty of ways for the Philippines to express themselves through clothing. Now that we’re in the midst of the pandemic’s new normal setup, the brand is doing the opposite by offering a physical shopping experience that mirrors its online service.

This month, the brand is bringing its mobile pop-up series dubbed Love, Bonito on Wheels to the country. From November 5 to December 18, the mobile pop-up is set to showcase the brand’s multiple collections at various locations in Metro Manila.

“This pop-up series is launched in recognition of the Philippine market’s demand for a physical Love, Bonito experience. While online shopping has seen a massive boom in recent years, we understand that our consumers now want to be able to enter a store and physically experience the brand beyond their screens, alongside the LBCommunity momentum that has grown in the Philippines,” says brand manager co-founder Rachel Lim. “Love, Bonito On Wheels is more than “A pop-up store for us is an experience for women to be able to discover pieces that help them look and feel their best, and to have the confidence to live their best life.”

‘Come to Yourself’

The launch of the mobile pop-up also echoes the brand’s new slogan, which is “Come Into Your Own”. It has always been part of Love, Bonito’s mission to empower women. With its new vision, it now aims to celebrate women’s personal journeys of self-discovery.

To further highlight its initiative, the brand invited former Editor-in-Chief Jillian Gatcheco and actress Coleen Garcia (its first-ever Filipina Ambassador) to talk more about starting a new chapter in their lives after achieving their dreams.

Former editor Jillian Gatcheco and actress Coleen Garcia (middle)

“I quit my nine-year job at Summit Media in January this year and took a three-month career hiatus. During that time, I filled my days with activities I never had the time for. time before,” said Jillian, the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan Philippines. “I felt healthier and happier because I’m finally dedicating more time to my well-being… I recognize that it’s a privilege which I worked hard for. So I stopped being guilty of taking a break.

Jillian became a member of Love, Bonito’s family when she starred in a campaign for her LYLAS collection, featuring a series of delicate bridesmaid dresses. Giving up her dream job and following another path is tough enough for Jillian, but being part of the campaign made her feel like she “was on the ‘right’ path. »

“Coming into yours isn’t just for those who have it all figured out in their lives,” she said. “It could also mean starting over… It’s not so much the destination, but a decision to stay true to the choices we make and just constantly evolve.”

Like everyone else, a lot has changed for Coleen during the pandemic. The model-listening actress became a mother. Thanks to her new role, she began to see life from a different perspective and gained new strength after struggling with the issues of being a public figure.

“If you feel like you got lost, just remember that you can always start over from any point in your life,” the actress said. “For me, I feel like I’m still in that space. I relearn to know myself, but now, without the outside noise.

His advice is to stop viewing the reboot process as an indicator of past failure. “For so many years, I wasted time believing what other people had to say about me,” Coleen said. “When you thrive, that’s the most beautiful feeling. You discover that everything in life can be so beautiful when you let things fall into their place and don’t let others rob you of your joy.

Where to find Love, Bonito On Wheels

COWARDLY

Dastardly is a free and lightweight web application security scanner for your CI/CD pipeline. It’s designed specifically for web developers and checks your application for seven security issues you might be interested in when developing software. Dastardly is based on the same scanner as Burp Suite (Burp Scanner).

Configuration

Datardly requires minimal setup. When running a Dastardly scan, all you have to do is provide the starting URL you want to scan. The starting URL is the point from which Dastardly crawls your target web application. From there, Dastardly analyzes all URLs it finds below the starting URL in the hierarchy.

Scanning

Dastardly uses dynamic methodology (DAST) to analyze your target web application. It scans your target application in a deployed state. This is different from static analysis (SAST), which examines application code before it is deployed.

Vile scans are limited to ten minutes. Note that this may not be enough to get full coverage of larger or more complex web applications. Burp Suite Enterprise Edition and Burp Suite Professional are both capable of scanning without this limitation.

Results

Dastardly produces its analysis reports in JUnit XML format. Issues found by Dastardly are accompanied by detailed remediation advice and evidence in the form of the request sent by Dastardly to produce the issue, as well as the response sent by the application.

Integrating Dastardly with your existing CI/CD platform

Despicable system requirements

  • We recommend running Dastardly on a machine with at least 4 CPU cores and 4 GB of RAM. While this should be fine for most use cases, larger or more complex target applications may require more resources.

  • Your agent or CI/CD build node must be configured to run Docker containers.

  • The CI/CD build agent or the node that Docker is running on must be able to access the PortSwigger public image repository (public.ecr.aws/portswigger/) as well as the target application you want to analyze.

Despicable troubleshooting

PortSwigger takes care of all the issues you might encounter while scanning apps using Dastardly. We do not provide support for issues involving your CI/CD platform, or Dastardly’s integration with that platform.

If you have any problem with a Dastardly scan, please see our user forum and/or consult the Dastardly FAQ.

DIVERSIFIED Food processing company, United Refineries Limited, is moving into the animal feed value chain, which has seen the company introduce a complete three-phase chicken feed product under its new brand of chicken feed. “NutriPro” foods.

The Bulawayo-based factory recently launched new products in the market, such as fortified flour, packaged rice and animal feed, as it expands its domestic and export footprint in line with the focus focused on added value.

United Refineries Limited

These are in addition to the traditional product range which includes cooking oil, bath soap and bar soap.
In an interview, Mr. Xolisani Moyo, Head of Animal Feed Department at URL, said that instead of selling raw soybean meal to other animal feed producers, the company decided to to add value within its factory and to complete its product range.

“At the moment, we are producing chicken concentrate, which is a mixture of vitamins and other elements mixed with soybean meal, and then the farmer has to mash the corn and add it,” he said. declared.

“This product is suitable for small chicken producers. On finisher feed, we have three phase chicken feed for broilers and layers, which are starter, grower and finisher.

“The concentrate has already been on the market for about 10 months now since we launched it, but the finishing feed, we are releasing it this month and we already have stocks.”

Mr. Moyo said URL’s feed production adds great value to the soybean value chain, where the company extracts oil from soybeans and the remaining soybean meal and soybean meal are also added value to produce different kinds of animal feed. from poultry to livestock.

Mr Moyo said the market is responding well to their products and their plan is to introduce a complete livestock feed package based on cattle, goat and pig feed.

He said the Nutripro unit is still in the development phase and the company has already established relationships with distributors so the new product can gain access to customers.

  • Gambling is illegal in most parts of China, but experts say it’s widespread due to copycat websites that “mirror” established ones.
  • Betting companies sometimes hire people to “infiltrate” chat groups and encourage people to gamble.
  • Insider found 59 mirror sites operated by subsidiaries of British company Bet365.

Tao Huang has been playing online for 8 years.

Although he always used the same online account, the web address he visited changed all the time.

Huang, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, is from Guangxi in southern China.

He is one of many people in the country who have visited “mirror” websites: identical clones of betting sites hosted on obscure web addresses to circumvent government blocks on major gambling company URLs.

Huang told Insider via an online translation tool, “The website is blocked in China, but it will still appear in front of you as long as you need it. You don’t need a VPN.”

Gambling is illegal in most parts of China, with the exception of state-owned national lotteries, and recognized gambling sites are blocked for Chinese users.

The “mirror” sites Huang says he played on are hosted by subsidiaries of UK-based gambling company Bet365, one of the world’s largest sports betting sites. Insider verified this using Website Informer and Companies House, the UK’s public company registry.

The sites look exactly the same as the main Bet365 site, but have different IP addresses and URLs, and Huang’s Bet365 client account also worked on them, carrying the money he invested and earned.

According to Ben Lee, managing partner at IGamiX Management and Consulting in Macau, China, government censors eventually identify mirror websites and block them, but other sites are instantly created in their place to stay ahead of the game. on the censors.

“It’s a mole game,” he said.

In June, Insider found 59 mirror sites operated by affiliates of Bet365. It is one of many gambling companies that have mirror sites.

Experts said Insider mirror websites are a “common” practice of betting companies in countries that don’t allow gambling. “It’s very, very common. China has an active presence in online gambling,” Ben Lee said.

Experts told Insider that it is difficult to quantify the size of the market, but the People’s Bank of China has estimated the money from betting-related activities flowing out of China to be around 1 trillion yen (54 billion) in 2019, according to a report by Asian Racing. federated states.

According Article 303 of the Chinese Penal Code, it may be an offense to organize Chinese citizens to participate in gambling activities outside the country. The Chinese government made an amendment in 2021 to its gambling law to strengthen penalties for offshore gambling.

However, David Lee, gambling lawyer at Lin & Partners, says the law “does not explicitly mention whether Chinese law enforcement can take action against gambling operators outside of China”.

“It is debatable whether Chinese law enforcement can prosecute a crime committed outside of China, particularly in a jurisdiction where the offshore gambling activity involved has been duly authorized,” he added.

Bet365 said it does not believe operating in China is illegal and is licensed by “relevant regulatory authorities in various jurisdictions and complies with all applicable laws”.

He told Insider that, “in the opinion of Bet365 and its lawyers”, the tougher sanctions introduced by China last year do not change “the position of an offshore operator offering remote gambling services , without physical presence, people, assets or infrastructure in the jurisdiction.”

He added that he believed: “Chinese law does not extend to the provision of services in China by gambling operators and offshore service providers.”

A virtual army

Huang said it was easy to find a link to a new mirror game site once an old one was blocked: his friends sent him the URL. His account and the money in it remained the same when he moved to a new site.

But “friends” sharing game links on Chinese social media might have a hidden agenda.

According to Ben Lee, one of the ways gambling sites attract customers is by hiring young people to pose as gamblers and “infiltrate” online chat groups on popular platforms. in China like Weibo and WeChat.

They befriend people and claim they have won money from gambling, and encourage other users to visit mirror sites. David Lee claims that this marketing is “the key to success” for online gambling operators.

The workers typically live outside of China, in countries like the Philippines or Cambodia, and are paid around $1,000 a month, Ben Lee said. “They need a small virtual army of young Chinese to do telemarketing,” he added.

The Philippine Department of Justice plans to deport around 40,000 Chinese working in the country for offshore gambling companies, Reuters reported in September. He added that the country’s liberal gaming laws allow these companies to target players in China.

“I have to get my money back”

Huang had his Bet365 account temporarily frozen in May.

In emails seen by Insider, Bet365 asked him to show a “certificate of deposit” proving that the 20,000 yuan funds he deposited into his account came from a bank account in his name, in order to trace access to his account. He was still waiting to receive his funds when Insider last spoke to him in the spring and hasn’t responded to questions since.

Bet365 told Insider it was unable to discuss individual player accounts. The spokesperson added that the company is licensed and regulated in Gibraltar and under Gibraltar regulations clients may be required to submit documentary evidence to verify their identity or source of funds.

“The most terrible thing is that I still have 260,000 yuan ($37,000) in my account. That’s all my savings.” The insider could not verify the amount to which Huang said he lost access.

Gamblers like Huang believe they have little or no way to get legal help if they lose money, as gambling is illegal in China, with the risk of jail time.

“I hope regulators can protect players like me,” he said, adding that he thought it would be difficult to get his money back.

When Insider spoke to Huang, he hinted that he wanted to quit gambling and showed Insider an email he had sent to a gambling addiction charity for help.

“The game is truly abominable,” he said. “I have to get my money back.”
