Serena Williams finds a new mental health resource in Prince Harry
Two things I learned this week: On the one hand, the tennis icon Serena Williams is actually Prince Harry’s best friend. And two, Prince Harry has like… a real job, and a good one too! The Duke of Sussex is the impact director of BetterUp, an organization that offers mental health services and employee coaching for staff.
Last Thursday, the San Francisco-based company hosted a roundtable with CEO Alexi Robichaux and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. Williams spoke to the public about burnout, limitations and loss, despite giving it his all.
“It’s tough. I’m a terrible loser,” Williams said. “When it comes to losing, I even hate that word,” she said. “Because for me, if I have a loss, I learn a lot. Some of my best growth has come from a loss.
“Even when I’m investing in a business, I actually want to know about your losses,” Williams continued. “If you have started a business before, how did you do it? … Where did you somehow fail? Because if everything was so good and so clean and so easy, it doesn’t even build character, you know? »
Harry then imparted wisdom suitable for all ages.
“If you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s, and you think everything’s settled, then bad things are going to happen,” he said.
Harry, who joined the company in March 2021, is passionate about BetterUp’s mission.
“I strongly believe that focusing on and prioritizing our mental fitness unlocks potential and opportunities that we didn’t know we had within us,” he said.
“Being in tune with your spirit and having a support structure around you is key to finding your own version of peak performance,” the Duke added. “What I’ve learned in my own life is the power to turn pain into purpose.”
Lately we learned of two terrible tragedies involving the suicidal deaths of two of our brightest stars; former Miss USA, Cheslie Krystand Ian Alexander Jr.., entrepreneur and son of actress Regina King. It seems like we never really know how much people are hurting, even when they are close to us.
Harry and Williams share a close friendship which includes the Duke’s wife, Meghan Markle. Williams credits Harry for helping her find the mental health coach she works with to this day.
“I know I’m kidding a lot, but Harry is actually one of my coaches,” Williams shared with a laugh. “Whenever I see him, he always solves all the problems in my life, so I give this to your coach BetterUp, it kind of helped me – so thank you!”
