Upper Darby superintendent promises resources to students after football game panic

The Upper Darby School District said on Saturday it would provide help and support to students who need to speak to someone following the panic at the end of the Friday night football game involving the high school.

“We know that yesterday evening was very traumatic for everyone involved,” Superintendent Dr. Daniel P. McGarry said in an emailed statement Saturday. “Our focus at this time is to ensure that we provide our students and staff with the support(s) they need.”

McGarry said a fight took place somewhere in the crowd. Soon a large number of spectators were running, many towards the intersection of Lansdowne Avenue and Garrett Road.

“We are unable to provide further details at this time,” the administrator said. “We only know from what was reported by Upper Darby police that there was no evidence of a shooting.”

The panic unfolded in the fourth quarter of the game at rival and host Mrgr. Bonner-Prendergast.

“I want to thank our Upper Darby administration, our coaching staff and our student athletes (cheerleaders and football players) for responding appropriately and for quickly helping others and themselves to recover. get to safety,” McGarry wrote.

“We will also continue to implement very strict guidelines and procedures for admission to an Upper Darby School District event held at a district venue.”
