Upshur County Schools Receive Grant to Fund Prevention Resource Officers

BUCKHANNON, W.Va (WDTV) – In the wake of the Oxford Michigan shooting, schools across the country have faced copy threats, including in our area.

West Virginia distributes over $ 1 million to schools to hire prevention resource officers.

As students return to class after distance learning and other pandemic precautions … The threat of dangerous situations like an active shooter also returns.

“A prevention resource officer cannot be underestimated in our schools,” said Sisk.

Schools in Upshur County received $ 15,000 to help hire prevention resource officers.

It is one of many districts in West Virginia that received additional funding through a $ 1.1 million state grant.

District Security Director Matthew Sisk says the idea of PROs is new to the area.

“It’s pretty unique to West Virginia, a lot of other places call them school resource officers, but they’re almost entirely the same thing,” Sisk said.

And while they may play a role in the safety of students, it is not their sole responsibility.

“They play a key role in crime prevention and education and life skills within schools,” Sisk said.

While Sisk says studies have shown PROs reduce violent crime … they also work with school administration.

“They help participate in our exercises, help lead these exercises,” Sisk said.

Sisk says there is a PRO at Buckhannon Upshur Middle and High School.

He says they are an important resource for students and families.

“They play a key role in the communication between the school system and our police, they always talk with us. I have already had many opportunities to meet our two professionals, I like working with them”, a said Sisk.
